Explanation

The six simple machines that you will be learning about are screws, the wedge, inclined plane, lever, and the wheel and axle. These simple machines can be put together into one contraption to make a complex system. A misconception is that a gear is a simple machine but it actually isn't. The picture to the left is a picture of a bikes tire. This is an example of a wheel and axle.
Screw

A screw is basically a curled up wedge. It is mainly used to hold things together. If you spin it, it will push itself strongly in place. A screw driver is usually needed for using the screw effectively.
Wedge

A wedge is a shape that is wider and becomes thinner until it is a sharp point. It is used to be stuck into an object. An example of that is the picture of the knife dug into an apple.
Inclined plain

An inclined plain is anything that goes up in height. An example of an inclined plain is a ramp. That is shown in the picture to the left. Another example of an inclined plain is stairs. They aren't one solid surface but they still take you upwards. Inclined plains are used for many things including recreation, making this easier, and also for transporting stuff.
Pulley

A pulley makes it easier to lift something off the ground. You have to the string that has the red arrow by it downwards. This will cause the weight above the blue arrow to lift upwards.
wHEEL aND AXLE

The wheel and axle is mostly known for making it easier to move across long or short distances. It is seen on a bike, a car, scooter, etc. When you peddle a bike for example it spins the barrings which have a tight grip on the tires forcing the tires to spin with them. Some people say that the most important invention in the world. The wheel and axle is needed for so many machines and just make life all around easier.
Lever

There are 3 types of levers. They are 1st class, 2nd class and 3rd class. To remember the 3 classes you have to remember FLE 123. F is 1, L is 2 and E is 3. So for 1st class fulcrum is in the middle, 2nd class lever is in the middle, and 3rd class effort is in the middle. A lever is usually used to make something easier to lift.
